Planning a surprise proposal in charleston, SC?

So, you're planning to pop the question in Charleston?! First of all, CONGRATULATIONS! 🤍
Charleston is easily one of the most beautiful places to propose. Between the historic streets, waterfront views, Spanish moss, and gorgeous beaches, you really can't go wrong.
But planning a surprise proposal can be a little stressful, especially if you're not familiar with the area. Where should you do it? What time is best? How do you make sure your photographer captures the moment without ruining the surprise?
That's where I come in!
As a Charleston proposal photographer, I don't just show up with my camera and hope for the best. I help you plan the details so that when the moment comes, all you have to worry about is getting down on one knee!
Heres everything you need to know...
Choosing the Perfect Charleston Proposal Location
One of the first things we'll figure out is WHERE you're going to propose.
Charleston has so many beautiful locations, but the perfect spot really depends on your relationship, your personalities, and the kind of experience you want.
Here are a few of my favorites!
Pitt Street Bridge – Mount Pleasant, SC
If you're dreaming of a romantic waterfront proposal with beautiful marsh views, Pitt Street Bridge is a great option.
It's especially gorgeous around sunset when the light gets soft and golden. There's plenty of room to walk together, and we can plan an exact spot where I'll be waiting to capture the moment.
Downtown Charleston
If you love Charleston's historic charm, downtown is hard to beat!
Between the cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and beautiful architecture, there are so many romantic little spots to choose from.
Some of my favorites include Philadelphia Alley, White Point Garden, and the areas surrounding The Battery.
Plus, once you've popped the question, we can walk around downtown and take some newly engaged portraits!
Sullivan's Island or Isle of Palms
Want something a little more relaxed? Let's head to the beach!
I'm a HUGE fan of sunrise beach sessions. The lighting is soft, the beaches are usually less crowded, and there's something so special about starting the day with a proposal. Sunset can be beautiful too, but if you're open to waking up early, sunrise is definitely worth considering!
Cypress Gardens
If you want something straight out of a romantic movie aka THE NOTEBOOK, Cypress Gardens is one of the most unique places around Charleston. The beautiful blackwater swamp, cypress trees, and iconic rowboats make for an incredibly romantic setting.
Whether you're planning a proposal on land or incorporating the boats, this is one location where planning ahead is especially important.
Not sure which location is right for you? That's okay! I can help you narrow it down based on your vision, the lighting, and how private you'd like the moment to feel.
Keep in mind that some locations require admission, advance arrangements, or photography permits. We'll want to check those details before finalizing your plan.
How Do We Keep the Photographer a Surprise?
This is probably one of the questions I get asked the most!
And don't worry, we've got options.
Depending on the location, I can blend in with other people, pretend to be photographing the scenery, or position myself somewhere nearby where I can capture everything without drawing attention.
Before the proposal, we'll go over exactly where you need to stand, which direction to face, and how we'll know when you're ready.
I also recommend having a simple reason for bringing your partner to the location, whether that's a walk before dinner, sightseeing, or just enjoying the views.
What Happens After They Say YES?!
First, CELEBRATE!! I will give you a few minutes to settle in and enjoy - hug each other, laugh, cry, admire the ring, and soak in the fact that YOU'RE ENGAGED!
Once you've had a chance to enjoy the moment, I'll introduce myself if we haven't already met, and we'll move into some engagement portraits.
And if you're worried about being awkward in front of the camera, please don't be!
I'll help guide you through everything while still making sure the photos feel natural and true to you.
No stiff poses or forced smiles required. One if the compliments I receive most is how I am able to seamlessly pose couples. It will feel like a friend is there guiding you along the way!
As soon as you have a date in mind!
Charleston is a popular destination for proposals, weddings, and vacations, especially during spring and fall.
Booking ahead gives us more time to choose the perfect location, coordinate the timing, and work through any little details that will help the surprise go smoothly.
That being said, if you're planning something last minute, still reach out! I'm always happy to check my availability.
